AEO · Plain-English guide

What is AEO, in plain English?

The short answer

AEO (answer engine optimization) is making sure that when someone asks an AI a question, your business is what it recommends — in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, or Google's AI answer. It runs on the same foundation as SEO — useful, clear, trusted content — just tilted toward directly answering the real questions people ask.

If SEO is about showing up on Google, AEO is about showing up when someone asks an AI instead. Same instinct — be the answer people are looking for — moved into the way a fast-growing number of people now search. Here it is in plain English. (If you haven't read the first half, start with what SEO is — this builds on it.)

Searching became asking

For twenty years, "looking something up" meant typing a few keywords into Google and scanning a page of links. That's still huge — but a growing slice of people now do something different: they open an AI assistant and ask a real, full question, like they'd ask a knowledgeable friend.

And the AI doesn't hand back ten links to sift through. It gives one answer — and often names two or three businesses. Frequently you get what you need without visiting a single website. That's the whole game changing shape, and it's why "how do I show up in that answer?" is suddenly a real question for any business.

How an AI actually answers

Just like Google has its crawl–index–rank, an AI assistant does a few jobs before it replies. Understanding these three makes the rest obvious.

So AEO is really about influencing steps 2 and 3: become a source the AI trusts, and become the business it names.

A couple of terms
An answer engine is any AI that gives you one direct answer instead of a list of links — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google's own "AI Overview" at the top of results. Zero-click is the new normal it creates: people get their answer without clicking through to anyone's website at all. Great if you're in the answer; invisible if you're not.

What gets you into the answer

The reassuring part: AI is even harder to trick than Google, so it rewards the same honest things — just tilted a little.

Answer real questions, directly. AI loves content that asks a clear question and answers it plainly, right up front — the way a person actually phrases it. "How much does a recruitment agency cost in Singapore?" beats a clever headline that dances around it.

Be easy to quote. Clear structure — plain headings, short definitions, simple facts and lists — makes it easy for an AI to lift your point cleanly into its answer. Waffle gets skipped.

Be mentioned and trusted across the web. This is the big one. An AI effectively reads the room — if lots of trusted places describe you consistently (your site, reviews, directories, articles), it becomes confident enough to recommend you by name. Reputation, spread across the internet, is what it's really weighing.

Be readable by the AI. The same housekeeping as SEO — a clean, fast, technically-open site the AI's crawler can actually read, not one that quietly blocks it.

A real example. Someone opens ChatGPT and asks what's a good engineering recruitment agency in singapore? You want the answer to come back naming JTE Recruit. That happens when the same things line up: the site clearly explains what it does, it's described consistently across the web, and it's genuinely a strong fit. This isn't hypothetical — sites already get real, measurable visits sent from ChatGPT and Perplexity, just like Google clicks.

The good news: it's mostly the same job as SEO

Here's the relief: SEO and AEO are not two separate mountains. They share the exact same foundation — content that's genuinely useful, clearly written, and trusted across the web. Do the SEO fundamentals well, and you're already most of the way to AEO. The small extra tilt worth remembering:

Why it's worth caring about early

Search is quietly splitting in two: the classic Google list, and this new "just ask the AI" answer. The businesses that show up in those AI answers will quietly win the next wave of customers — and right now, very few are even thinking about it. Being early is a real, cheap advantage: the kind that's obvious in hindsight and invisible until then.

The bottom line

SEO gets you found. AEO gets you recommended. Two names, one truth underneath: be the genuinely most useful, clearest, most trusted answer to a real question — and both quietly work in your favour. Haven't read the first half? Start with what SEO is, in plain English.

Common questions

AEO (answer engine optimization) is making sure that when someone asks an AI a question, your business is the one it recommends — in tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, or Google's AI answer. It runs on the same foundation as SEO: useful, clear, trusted content, just tilted toward directly answering the questions people ask.

SEO gets you found on Google's list of links. AEO gets you named in the single answer an AI gives back. The job underneath is the same — be the most useful, clearest, most trusted answer to a real question — so doing your SEO fundamentals well already gets you most of the way to AEO.

Answer real questions directly and up front, keep your writing clear and easy to quote, and build a consistent reputation across your site, reviews and other trusted places. Also keep the site fast and technically open so the AI's crawler can actually read it.

Yes. A growing slice of people already ask an AI instead of scrolling Google, yet very few businesses are thinking about it — so being early is a cheap, real advantage. Sites already get measurable visits sent from ChatGPT and Perplexity, just like Google clicks.
